Normally gagging has little impact on an escape attempt, but in this case it was literally the difference between success and failure. Had the comment about Clover's ring "melting their face" not been made, the idea to use the laser to melt the incoming sand would have never come about. Heck, if their eyes were wrapped along with their mouths they would not have even seen the ring's gleam at all.

The situation would have been completely different:


Girls: "Mmmpphh! Mmff! MMMPPHH!"

(Sand buries up to their necks)

Girls: "MMMMFFFFF!!"

(Girls get buried and become REAL mummies)
